An article posted on 3rd June 2021 on a website dedicated to “human-centric” AI news, whatever that is, waxes very slightly lyrical about a new “multi-modal AI system” in China called “Wu Dao”.

This is apparently Big News®™ because it can do more than one thing. Amazing. Oh and it’s “huge”. The AI model was trained with 1.75 trillion parameters, allegedly 10 times the size of OpenAI’s GPT-3 model.

Really the only newsworthy thing about this is summed up in the final paragraph…

We may already be seeing diminishing returns on power if the most exciting thing about a system trained on supercomputer clusters with 1.75T parameters is that it can generate digital pop stars.

An amusing take on what is literally the most over-hyped vapourware in history. AI is about as close to actual intelligence as green-painted concrete is to grass.

Please remember to ask any of the AI prophets and GAI/Singularity evangelists this question… How exactly do we go from transistor-based machines that require human input to do something as basic as identifying a cat and a dog correctly, to self-enhancing sentient cyber-machines that are the next deities by just making calculations quicker and doing more of them?

When a robot calls bullshit on the claims about the Gods of the Future, General Artificial Intelligence beings that will spontaneously emerge one day and pwn all the humans, you know it must be a load of crap.
