Mind Your Language
September 15, 2025The Linux Foundation in partnership with a bunch of mega-corps have produced an “inclusive language guide” for programmers.

When a server crashes and your website just sits there in a permanently loading state, you are now not allowed to say that the server has “hung”. The word “hung” is now considered “violent language”. Also, we are not allowed dummy code or dummy entries, as the word “dummy” is “ableist language”, as are the words “normal” and “abnormal”. Obviously “whitelists” and “blacklists” are totally racist, as are “master” and “slave”, so not allowed. The phrase “native feature” is now banned, as the word “native” is “socially charged language”, as is “housekeeping”.
If this is all too much to take in, don’t worry as IDEs are now getting plugins to help stop you committing a dynamically expanding array of -ists and -isms in your code. JetBrains are already starting to ship some of their IDEs with the plugins installed and active by default.
What a wonderful time for you humans to be alive.
